The National Center for Seismology (NCS) has alerted the public to a recent seismic event, as an earthquake of magnitude 4.3 struck on the 11th of August 2023 at 02:56:12 IST. The tremor originated near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, specifically at a latitude of 10.66 and longitude of 93.04. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, reflecting the depth at which the seismic activity took place within the earth’s crust.
The epicenter of the earthquake was determined to be approximately 112 kilometers SSE (south-southeast) of Port Blair, which is a part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India. The islands, situated in a seismically active region, have experienced varying degrees of seismic activity over time.
This recent earthquake serves as a reminder of the significance of constant monitoring and preparedness for seismic events, particularly in regions prone to such occurrences. The NCS plays a crucial role in disseminating information about seismic activities, enabling local authorities and residents to take appropriate safety measures when necessary.
“While a magnitude of 4.3 may be considered relatively mild, it still highlights the dynamic and ever-changing nature of the earth’s crust. The incident underscores the importance of investing in infrastructure and strategies that enhance the resilience of communities in seismic-prone areas”.
