£82 Million Sea Wall and New Railway Station Boost South West’s Transport Infrastructure.

Passengers in the South West can look forward to more reliable train journeys, thanks to the completion of an £82 million government-funded sea wall project in Dawlish. Transport Secretary Mark Harper visited Devon on July 3, 2023, to commemorate the achievement and officially open a new railway station at Marsh Barton near Exeter. These initiatives aim to improve local and regional connections, boost the economy, and demonstrate the government’s commitment to investing in the region’s infrastructure.

Dawlish Sea Wall: Protecting Coastal Rail Route

The completion of the new sea wall in Dawlish brings greater resilience to the vital coastal rail route in the South West. The £82 million project, executed in two phases, ensures the safety of local passengers during extreme weather conditions. Notably, the second phase of the project also protects the historic Dawlish train station, classified as a Grade 2 listed building.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper’s Statement

Transport Secretary Mark Harper expressed his delight in witnessing the successful completion of two major projects. He emphasized the government’s commitment to improving crucial rail routes for passengers in the South West, underscoring the investment in vital infrastructure and transportation connections to support economic growth.

South West Resilience Programme: Strengthening the Railway

The Dawlish sea wall project forms part of the £165 million South West Resilience Programme. It is a significant step toward fulfilling the government’s pledge to create a more resilient railway network following the devastating storms in 2014, which rendered the tracks unusable for eight weeks and disrupted passenger services. The completion of this project marks a major milestone, providing a promenade and new public areas for the local community. Network Rail is also actively working on developing a new, accessible footbridge with lifts at Dawlish Station. The programme includes ongoing cliff protection work, including the construction of a rockfall shelter at Holcombe.

Marsh Barton Railway Station: Enhancing Accessibility and Connectivity

During his visit, Transport Secretary Mark Harper also attended the official opening of the new Marsh Barton railway station. Managed by Great Western Railway (GWR), this fully accessible station will serve the popular Exeter to Plymouth rail line. With its opening scheduled for July 4, 2023, the station will contribute to easing congestion on busy roads in Exeter while providing a more sustainable transportation option. It is one of three GWR stations set to open this year, alongside Portway ‘Park and Ride’ in Bristol and Reading Green Park. The Marsh Barton station, delivered and funded by Devon County Council, will improve community connectivity and provide enhanced access to employment, business, and educational opportunities. Notably, it will offer a convenient alternative route to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, facilitating easier access to essential medical services for residents.
