A total of 901 personnel from the police force have been awarded the Police Medal on the occasion of Republic Day in 2023. 140 people have been awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry, 93 have been awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, and 668 have been awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.
The majority of the 140 Gallantry Awards are being given to 80 personnel from Left Wing Extremism affected areas and 45 personnel from the Jammu & Kashmir region for their gallant actions. 48 personnel from CRPF, 31 from Maharashtra, 25 from J&K Police, 09 from Jharkhand, and 07 each from Delhi, Chhattisgarh & BSF received Gallantry Awards. The remaining awards were given to personnel from other States/UTs and CAPFs.
The Police Medal for Gallantry is awarded for conspicuous gallantry in saving life and property, or in preventing crime or arresting criminals.
The President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service is awarded for a special, distinguished record in Police Service, and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service is awarded for valuable service characterized by resourcefulness and devotion to duty.
