Acute Fever : Symptoms, causes, and treatment

Many of us are familiar with the symptoms of an acute fever – feeling really hot and sweaty, a headache, muscle aches, and unrestful sleep. But do you know what causes these symptoms? What antibiotics can be used to treat acute fever? And what are the risk factors associated with this disease? Find out here!

What are the Symptoms of Acute Fever?

The symptoms of an acute fever vary depending on the type of fever that the person is experiencing. The most common symptom is a feeling of warmth, or heat, in the skin. Other symptoms may include aches, chills, fatigue and muscle pain. Acute fever is the term used to describe fever lasting less than 7 days. In adults, acute fever usually lasts for 3 to 5 days before it starts to subside and no longer be considered acute. Acute fever can have a multitude of symptoms that vary depending on the individual’s health. Symptoms such as headache, chills, shivering, muscle aches and diarrhea are common with acute fever.

Different Types of Acute Fever

Acute fever is classified by the Mayo Clinic as a type of fever that lasts for less than four days and has a sudden onset. There are three main types of acute fever depending on when it appears: bacterial, viral, or fungal. There are three types of acute fever that are common in, which include:

  1. Elevated temperature with a rash (pyrexia)
  2. Fever without a rash
  3. Low-grade fever (hypothermia)

The most common type of acute fever is what we call ‘fever for no apparent reason’. This kind of fever usually lasts for a few days and is usually caused by an infection. The fever can also be caused by other things though, like a head injury or exposure to extreme heat or cold. It is important to know the symptoms of an acute fever in order to know what treatment should be taken and how long it will last.

Causes of Acute Fever

Acute fever is a wide term which encompasses a number of different illnesses. The major symptoms of acute fever include muscle pain, headache, and vomiting. The causes of acute fever can be divided into bacterial and viral infections. Viral infections cause the body to react by producing antibodies that fight off the infection. Bacterial infections are more likely to cause symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or high fevers. A doctor will most likely prescribe antibiotics to treat such an infection for the best possible result.

How Long Does Acute Fever Last?

Acute fever is defined as high temperature, rash, fatigue, and aches that last for about 3 days. If your fever goes above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, you should seek medical attention because it could be an indication of a condition such as meningitis or sepsis. Acute fever is a condition that causes body temperature to spike, sometimes dangerously. With it, the person’s normal metabolic rate will go up to try and maintain normal body temperature. The body releases heat in an attempt to keep up with the increased demand for energy. What causes acute fever? Acute fever can be caused by many different things including a high fever, infection, dehydration, blood loss, organ failure and other medical conditions.

The Treatment of Acute Feve

To relieve the pain and swelling caused by inflammation of the brain, a doctor might prescribe fever reducers. The most common ones are ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Some doctors might also recommend an antipyretic (fever reducer) such as aspirin or paracetamol. When a person has taken an illness, they are often given a set of instructions to follow in order to recover quickly. This includes the treatment of acute fever.

Because it is a common and serious symptom of many illnesses, many people do not know what it actually means or how to treat it. Acute fever can be broken down into three categories – heat or sunstroke, infectious fever, and non-infectious fevers such as pneumonia and gastroenteritis.
