Admiral R Hari Inaugurates Groundbreaking CO2-Based Air Conditioning Plant at INS Shivaji

In a pioneering move towards sustainability, Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, inaugurated a groundbreaking CO2-based Air Conditioning plant at INS Shivaji on January 17. This revolutionary technology marks a crucial shift, replacing conventional HFC (Hydro Fluro Carbons) and HCFC (Hydro Chloro Fluro Carbons) systems aboard naval ships.

This unique air conditioning plant stands as the first of its kind, aligning with India’s commitment to the 2016 Kigali Agreement. The agreement aims to phase down synthetic refrigerants like HFC and HCFC from 2028 onwards. The Transcritical CO2-based air conditioning plant at INS Shivaji sets the stage for India’s proactive approach to combating climate change.

“Equipped with advanced digital control systems and smart technology integration, the plant not only ensures energy efficiency but also reduces the manpower required for operation. Developed in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, this initiative exemplifies the synergy between Defence and Academia, bringing futuristic technology into the Armed Forces”.

The success of this cutting-edge technology extends beyond naval applications. With its potential for a wider commercial impact, the CO2-based air conditioning system could revolutionize the broader air-conditioning and refrigeration market.

“The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of key figures, including Cmde Mohit Goel, Commanding Officer INS Shivaji, Prof B Gurumoorthy, CEO, FSID, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, Mr. Amit Sharma, MD, CEO, Tata Consulting Engineers Ltd, & Mr. Arun Mote, Executive Director, Triveni Turbines Ltd, Bangalore”.

Admiral R Hari Kumar’s leadership in unveiling this innovative technology underlines the Indian Navy’s commitment to adopting sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives. This milestone not only sets a new standard for naval infrastructure but also contributes significantly to India’s larger vision of embracing green practices in diverse sectors.
