The Historical Significance of Vitasta (Jhelum) River

Shri Amit Shah, in his address, acknowledged the historical importance of the Vitasta River. For thousands of years, this majestic river has been a witness to numerous cultural explorations and research endeavors in Kashmir. Moreover, it has served as a meeting point for diverse cultures, symbolizing their harmonious assimilation. Renowned philosopher and theologian Adishankar also graced the banks of the Jhelum River, adding to its profound legacy.

Kashmir: A Melting Pot of Cultures

Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah emphasized the role of Kashmir as a cultural melting pot. Throughout history, Kashmir has nurtured scholars from various fields who have achieved fame not only in India but also on a global scale. The assimilation of different cultures is prominently reflected in Kashmir’s contemporary cultural landscape. The confluence of art, knowledge, and traditions has shaped the vibrant tapestry of Kashmiri culture.

Shri Amit Shah acknowledged the challenges that the Vitasta River has witnessed throughout its course. The Jhelum has endured turbulent times, including bloodshed, attacks by fanatics, and regime changes. It has also been a witness to the horrors of terrorism. Despite these trials, the river has encapsulated affection, love, and resilience within its currents, nurturing the land and its people.

Jhelum: Beyond a River

The Union Home Minister reiterated that perceiving the Jhelum merely as a river would be an oversight. The Jhelum represents the pinnacle of human civilization, a testament to the profound cultural heritage of Kashmir. The Vitasta Mahotsav serves as a platform to showcase the true essence of Kashmir to the entire world, unveiling its rich history, diverse culture, and unwavering spirit.

Shri Amit Shah quoted Adishankar, who referred to Kashmir as the land of knowledge. The Mughal rulers aptly labeled it the “heaven on earth,” while Samrat Ashoka recognized its potential as a hub for Buddhist philosophies. Culture, according to Shri Amit Shah, is not created in isolation; it evolves through the assimilation of various aspects of human life. India is fortunate to have a continuous stream of ancient culture flowing through every part of the country, forming the majestic Ganges of Indian culture.

The British rule once saw India’s diversity as a weakness. However, as Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah highlighted, this diversity is India’s greatest strength. The ability to embrace unity amidst diversity is a unique characteristic of Indian culture. The Vitasta Mahotsav plays a crucial role in spreading this message and showcasing Kashmir’s cultural specialty to the entire nation and the world.

Vitasta Mahotsav: Spreading Kashmir’s Cultural Specialties

The Vitasta Mahotsav aims to project Kashmir as a symbol of cultural integration and harmony. It provides a platform to showcase the vibrant arts, music, and traditional practices that have flourished in the region. By celebrating the festival, Kashmir asserts itself as a destination where art and knowledge thrive, epitomized by the establishment of the revered Sharda Peeth by Adi Shankar.

Shri Amit Shah commended the resilience of Kashmir, which has endured challenging times and emerged stronger. Despite the horrors of terrorism that claimed the lives of over 40,000 people, Kashmir is now embracing art and culture through initiatives like the Vitasta Mahotsav. Shri Amit Shah urged the youth of the valley to choose education and knowledge as their weapons, emphasizing that progress stems from empowerment and not violence.

Nurturing Youth: Shri Amit Shah’s Inspiring Message

Shri Amit Shah conveyed a powerful message to the youth of Kashmir, encouraging them to wield laptops, books, and pens instead of stones and weapons. He reiterated that Kashmir’s history has been devoid of hatred, as the region has always welcomed those who seek refuge or wish to contribute positively. Kashmir’s cultural legacy has propelled it forward like a river in perpetual motion.
