Home Minister Amit Shah accentuates the significance of World Tuberculosis Day, stressing its role in highlighting humanity’s ongoing struggle against this deadly disease. He acknowledges the critical efforts undertaken by the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the past decade to combat tuberculosis, focusing on raising awareness and leveraging new technologies for diagnosis and treatment.
Over the years, the Modi government has spearheaded extensive awareness campaigns and implemented advanced diagnostic and treatment methods, resulting in the saving of millions of lives. With a steadfast commitment, Shah calls for reinforcing the government’s resolve to eliminate tuberculosis by 2025.
World Tuberculosis Day, observed annually on 24th March, serves as a platform to raise public awareness about the global tuberculosis epidemic and efforts towards its eradication. In 2018 alone, 10 million individuals were afflicted with tuberculosis, leading to 1.5 million deaths, primarily in low and middle-income countries. This makes tuberculosis the leading cause of mortality from an infectious disease worldwide.
Designated as one of eleven official global public health campaigns by the World Health Organization (WHO), World Tuberculosis Day is instrumental in mobilizing international efforts towards combating the disease. Alongside campaigns such as World Health Day and World AIDS Day, it underscores the collective commitment to addressing global health challenges.
As the world observes World Tuberculosis Day, Amit Shah’s remarks serve as a call to action, urging governments and stakeholders worldwide to intensify their efforts in the fight against tuberculosis and work towards achieving a tuberculosis-free world.
