Union Home Minister Amit Shah is leading in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar seat as vote counting for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections commenced at 8:00 am on Tuesday, June 4. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) heavyweight faces Congress leader Sonal Patel in this crucial contest. Gandhinagar has a rich political history, being previously held by prominent leaders such as former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani in 2014 and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1996.
The Gandhinagar constituency went to the polls on May 7, during the third phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP has maintained a stronghold in this seat for over a decade, with leaders like Vajpayee and Advani marking significant victories.
As the counting of votes progresses, it will decide the fate of candidates on 542 of the 543 Parliamentary seats, with postal ballot counting starting first. The Gandhinagar constituency, with a literacy rate of 74.98%, saw a slight decline in voter turnout this year, registering at 72%.
In the previous Lok Sabha elections, Amit Shah defeated Congress leader CJ Chavda, securing 8,94,624 votes against Chavda’s 5,57,014 votes. Shah is anticipated to win his second term from Gandhinagar, bolstered by the BJP’s strong foothold and the lack of a formidable opponent from Congress.
The BJP’s dominance in Gujarat is underscored by several leaders withdrawing their candidacy from the Gandhinagar seat, further easing Amit Shah’s path to victory. Exit polls have predicted a sweeping victory for the BJP in Gujarat, projecting wins in 25-26 seats, while Congress struggles to gain a foothold.
As of the latest updates, Amit Shah is set for a substantial victory, leading by 4 lakh votes from Gandhinagar, with Congress candidate Sonal Patel trailing at 1.10 lakh votes. Shah’s likely triumph in Gandhinagar reaffirms the BJP’s enduring influence in the state.
