Amit Shah: Success of “Whole of Government Approach” in Combating Narcotics

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, highlighted the significant progress made in the fight against drug abuse in India. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Home Affairs has embraced a zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics, which has proven to be highly effective in producing successful outcomes. A crucial component of this policy is the “Whole of Government Approach,” which emphasizes coordination among various departments to enhance the effectiveness of the anti-narcotics measures.

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

In his message on the occasion of the “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking,” Union Home Minister Amit Shah extends his congratulations to all organizations and individuals dedicated to combating drugs. He expresses his satisfaction that the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is organizing the nationwide “Nasha Mukt Pakhwada” (Drug-Free Fortnight) in observance of this important day.

The Resolve to Eradicate Drug Trade

The Union Home Minister reiterates the government’s unwavering determination to prevent narcotics trade within India’s borders and its use as a route for global drug trafficking. In this ongoing campaign, all major agencies, especially the Narcotics Control Bureau, are tirelessly fighting against drug-related crimes. To strengthen these efforts, the Ministry of Home Affairs established the National Coordination Centre for Narcotics Control (NCORD) in 2019. Additionally, Anti-Narcotics Task Forces (ANTF) were formed in police departments across every state, with the first national conference held in Delhi in April 2023.

The Impact of Comprehensive Measures

Shri Amit Shah emphasizes that a comprehensive and coordinated approach against drugs is being pursued at the national level through appropriate platforms. The results are evident as the value of seized drugs has increased significantly, from Rs. 768 crore between 2006 and 2013 to nearly Rs. 22,000 crore between 2014 and 2022, representing a 30-fold rise. Furthermore, there has been a remarkable 181% increase in the number of cases registered against drug peddlers compared to the previous period. These statistics reflect the Modi government’s commitment to achieving a drug-free India. To prevent the reuse of seized drugs, a destruction campaign was launched in June 2022, resulting in the destruction of approximately 6 lakh kg of narcotics across the country.

People’s Participation: A Crucial Factor

The Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation emphasize that the battle against drug abuse cannot be won without the active participation of the people. The Ministry of Home Affairs, in collaboration with institutions and states, is making relentless efforts to eradicate drug cultivation and raise public awareness. The harmful impact of drugs not only hollows out the younger generation and society but also poses a threat to national security, as the proceeds from drug smuggling are often utilized against the country’s safety. The Minister urges citizens to actively engage in the fight against drug misuse by reporting any drug-related activities to security agencies.

A Collective Victory

Shri Amit Shah expresses confidence that through collective efforts, the nation will triumph over the drug problem and realize the goal of a “Drugs-free India.” He extends his congratulations to the Narcotics Control Bureau and other institutions for their contributions towards the government’s resolution. The Minister affirms that the fight against drugs will continue until victory is achieved.
