In a landmark development, Apple Inc. will manufacture the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models in India from their initial release. This strategic move is set to ensure that ‘Made in India’ versions of these models are available globally on their launch date.
A Shift from Traditional Production
Historically, Apple’s production has been concentrated in China, with key partners like Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron handling much of the assembly. However, this new strategy marks a significant shift in Apple’s manufacturing approach, indicating a trend toward diversifying production capabilities.
Foxconn Leads the Charge
Foxconn, which operates a major facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, is expected to lead this initiative. The New Product Introduction (NPI) process will guide the transition from design to full-scale production, with mass production set to begin once the models are officially launched.
Expansion of Indian Manufacturing
Apple’s commitment to expanding its manufacturing footprint in India began with the iPhone SE in 2017. Over the years, the company has progressively increased local production, including the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, though these models were assembled in India several months post-release. Notably, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus were manufactured in India from their launch.
This move represents a significant evolution in Apple’s manufacturing strategy, underscoring its commitment to diversifying its production base and enhancing the global availability of its flagship devices.
