Going through an emotional trauma and soaking themselves in the depth of it is a very common practice of human beings. Sometimes, it is not the current bad experience but our mind dives in the negative experiences of the past and orbits around it. This inability to get rid of negative thoughts and memories can really take you down. You too are unhappy with your mental situation and blame it as depression. Have you tried to find out if it is depression really or you are not just ready to lighten your emotional burden?
Is it Depression or Sadness?
First of all, we need to understand Depression.
Depression is not just about being sad but it is more than that. It is a sort of mental illness that has so many symptoms. You feel exhausted all the time, you lose interest in all the activities you once loved to do, you want to stay away from people and loneliness interests you and last but not the least, suicidal thoughts often pay visits to your mind. Sometimes, depression stays for longer, like for years and sometimes episodes of it stay for a few weeks but may be triggered by familiar negative events.
How to know if you are just SAD or DEPRESSED?
Losing a job, Losing someone, breakups and other daunting events are definitely not enjoyable but they are normal too. Come on !!! Its life… You have to accept the fact that it is a journey full of unexpected emotional stops. The soon you understand, the better it is. Sadness or extreme sadness is a natural response to negative events like these but regular sadness can be turned into depression which is prolonged mental illness.
Physical and hormonal changes can cause mood switches and may make you feel low but don’t confuse it with depression. It is temporary and fades away gradually. Also, if your feelings ain’t getting better over time and your mood blocks the regular activities of daily life, then you are definitely boarding towards DEPRESSION.
You can switch your moods if you are sad, like you can laugh and enjoy for a short time but if you are depressed, nothing can interest you. The twist is, thinking about the emotionally traumatic events becomes your brain food. You only want to think or talk about them.

Symptoms of Depression may include:
- constant feelings of sadness
- fatigue
- Irregular sleeping or eating patterns
- loss of interest in things you loved once
- feelings of deep, baseless guilt, worthlessness
- headaches or body aches that do not have a particular cause
- suicidal thoughts or actions

- Low immunity
- Distances with your near and dear ones
- Losing memory power
- Insomnia
- Bad Health
What now?
For Sadness first of all, you need to learn how to draw the line. You have to identify those thoughts that can cause you emotional harm and try to filter them out of your mind. It definitely is a daunting task but it can save you from depression. You have to engage yourself in engaging activities like watching Tv or other tasks that you enjoy. If possible, must try to eliminate all the factors that cause you sadness. If not, deal with them. Confront the emotional issues in your life yourself if you don’t want to take help.
Now that Depression is something that can not be taken for granted and it definitely needs medical attention. Good News, it is treatable with certain determination and cooperation. It is surely living your life in a black hole but you must know that you can only enlighten it. Don’t self declare the state of emotional war, GET-UP !! The remedy is around you only. Talk to people, especially to your close ones. Learn the fact that this state of mind is a parasite for your physical health too. Seek medical help and visit a psychiatrist for sessions. Even if you don’t want to, try to engage yourself in mind diverting activities like dance, gardening, walking, partying etc. Don’t forget to practice Yoga or meditation. For a while, stay away from activities that can trigger your emotional trauma like watching TV, reading a book (You can read personality boosting or motivational books), meeting or talking with someone related to negative experiences in your life.
Yes You Can Do It….
You are a human being and whatever has happened is a part of life, just remember this fact. You may find the lives of other people but do know that the grass is always greener on the other side. There is no emotional trauma that you can’t battle if you determine. Just think about the people who actually care about you.
Life is not simple, it never was, it never will. You have to become like a slime and be prepared to fit in any mould it serves you.
