Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu marked World Tuberculosis Day by urging collective vigilance in combating one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases. Emphasizing the significance of the occasion, he underscored the need for sustained efforts to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) and prevent its resurgence.
Guided by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Khandu expressed optimism about India’s trajectory towards TB eradication by 2025, five years ahead of the global target set by the World Health Organization (WHO). He stressed the importance of maintaining momentum in the fight against TB through a comprehensive approach encompassing early diagnosis, quality treatment access, and robust public awareness initiatives.
World Tuberculosis Day, observed annually on March 24, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the epidemic of TB and mobilize efforts towards its elimination. Despite progress in TB control, the disease remains a significant public health challenge, with millions of new cases and deaths reported each year, particularly in low and middle-income countries.
Khandu’s remarks coincide with WHO’s recognition of World Tuberculosis Day as one of eleven official global public health campaigns. Alongside initiatives such as World Health Day and World AIDS Day, the observance aims to galvanize global action and prioritize TB prevention, diagnosis, and treatment on the public health agenda.
As Arunachal Pradesh joins the global community in commemorating World Tuberculosis Day, the Chief Minister’s call for sustained vigilance underscores the state’s commitment to advancing TB control efforts and safeguarding public health. Through continued collaboration and concerted action, stakeholders can strive towards a TB-free future and ensure the well-being of communities worldwide.
