Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court has prolonged the judicial custody of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal until April 23 in connection with a money-laundering case stemming from the alleged excise policy scam. The decision was made during a hearing conducted through virtual conference, where co-accused K Kavitha’s custody was also extended until the same date.
The continuous extensions of Arvind Kejriwal’s custody may present a significant obstacle to the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Lok Sabha 2024 election campaigning efforts. With the party’s supremo entangled in legal proceedings, AAP faces challenges in maintaining its political momentum and public perception.
In a separate legal development, the Supreme Court has sought a response from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding Arvind Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest. The ED has been directed to file a reply to the AAP convener’s plea by April 24, with the matter scheduled for hearing on April 29.
Meanwhile, amidst the legal battles, Arvind Kejriwal continues to fulfill his duties as the Chief Minister of Delhi. AAP MP Sandeep Pathak announced plans to convene a meeting with two ministers next week to address various issues.
However, concerns have been raised over the treatment of Arvind Kejriwal in custody. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann accused the Tihar jail administration of subjecting the AAP chief to harsh conditions normally reserved for hardcore criminals. Following a meeting with Kejriwal in jail, Mann expressed dismay over the treatment meted out to the Delhi CM, emphasizing the need for fair treatment.
Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest in connection with the liquor policy case on March 21 has triggered widespread protests by AAP and other opposition parties within the INDIA bloc. The incident has also attracted international attention, with countries like the United States and Germany monitoring the developments closely.
