World Sparrow Day: Assam CM Advocates for Sparrow Conservation

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma underscores the significance of preserving sparrows as vital members of urban ecosystems, especially in the face of declining global populations due to rapid urbanization. Ahead of World Sparrow Day on March 20, Sarma urges collective efforts to reverse this trend and ensure the survival of these cherished creatures.

Highlighting the role of sparrows in adding charm to everyday life with their sweet chirps, Sarma stresses the need for immediate action to address the threats faced by these beloved birds. He emphasizes the importance of creating urban forests and enhancing greenery to provide conducive habitats for sparrows and aid in their conservation efforts.

World Sparrow Day, observed on March 20, is an international initiative aimed at raising awareness about the conservation of house sparrows and other common urban birds. It was initiated by the Nature Forever Society of India in collaboration with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation (France) and various other national and international organizations.

In 2010, the inaugural World Sparrow Day saw a global celebration featuring various activities like art contests, awareness drives, and sparrow-themed processions held across the world. The initiative seeks to not only raise awareness about the plight of sparrows but also provide a platform for networking and collaboration among conservationists working on common bird conservation globally.

As World Sparrow Day approaches, Sarma calls on citizens to join hands in safeguarding these precious creatures and ensuring their survival for generations to come. By coming together and implementing conservation measures, we can make a significant impact in preserving the biodiversity of our urban environments.
