Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised concerns about deforestation in the Greater Jorabat Hills of Meghalaya, following the recent flash floods in Guwahati. He pointed out that satellite images reveal significant environmental degradation in the area, particularly near USTM University.
Environmental Impact on Greater Jorabat Hills
The Chief Minister noted that deforestation in this region, located 6-7 kilometers from Guwahati, is extensive and alarming. He shared a time-lapse video showcasing the environmental destruction in the Greater Jorabat Hills, which he believes contributes to the rapid flooding witnessed in Guwahati during cloud bursts.
Call for Collaborative Efforts
Sarma emphasized that the issue extends beyond the USTM area, affecting other parts of the Greater Jorabat Hills. He called for collaborative efforts with the Meghalaya government to protect the shared habitats and mitigate the risk of future floods.
Government’s Commitment to Environmental Protection
The Assam government is committed to working with Meghalaya to address these environmental challenges. Sarma stressed the importance of preserving the region’s natural resources to prevent further disasters and ensure the safety of the communities in Guwahati and beyond.
