Assam CM Extends Warm Wishes to Assam Rifles on Their Raising Day

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conveys heartfelt wishes to all personnel of The Assam Rifles on the occasion of their Raising Day. Recognized as India’s oldest paramilitary service, The Assam Rifles holds a distinguished legacy of safeguarding the borders, countering insurgency, and upholding law and order in Northeast India.

Known as the “Sentinels of the North East” and “Friends of the Hill People,” The Assam Rifles has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1835 as the Cachar Levy, initially formed to protect tea gardens and plains of Assam against tribal unrest. Over the years, its responsibilities expanded, and it evolved into a key force in maintaining regional security and stability.

With a significant presence along the Indo-Myanmar border, The Assam Rifles plays a crucial role in border security operations, counterinsurgency efforts, and assisting during times of crisis. Its operational control lies under the Ministry of Home Affairs, with the Indian Army overseeing its activities.

Comprising 46 battalions and over 65,000 personnel, The Assam Rifles carries out multifaceted roles, including internal security operations, aid provision during emergencies, and facilitating communication and medical assistance in remote areas. Additionally, they have a pivotal role in guarding the India–Myanmar border since 2002.

Throughout history, The Assam Rifles have contributed significantly to various conflicts and theaters, including World Wars I and II, and maintaining law and order in regions like Arunachal Pradesh. Their dedication and valor continue to be instrumental in ensuring peace and security in the Northeastern region of India.
