A Baltimore port worker has come forward with concerning information regarding the Dali cargo ship’s condition before its collision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Container Royalty co-administrator Julie Mitchell disclosed that the vessel experienced a “severe electrical problem” mere days before the incident.
According to Mitchell, the ship encountered significant issues just 48 hours before the crash. “During those two days, the ship experienced significant power outages, encountering a severe electrical issue resulting in a complete loss of power, including engine failure,” Mitchell reported.
The situation escalated as refrigerated containers on the ship repeatedly tripped breakers, prompting mechanics to attempt repairs. Mitchell emphasized that such power problems are uncommon for cargo ships like the Dali and asserted that the vessel should not have departed the port until the issue was resolved.
An officer aboard the Dali corroborated Mitchell’s account, describing the harrowing moment when the ship lost power. “The ship lost all power, including steering and electronic systems… The scent of burnt fuel pervaded the engine room as darkness enveloped the surroundings,” they recounted.
These revelations underscore the gravity of the situation and raise pertinent questions about safety standards and maintenance protocols in maritime operations. As investigations into the collision continue, it is imperative to address and rectify any lapses in ship maintenance to prevent similar incidents in the future.
