On 4th March, Bharatiya Janata Party’s National President, JP Nadda, tendered his resignation as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, representing Himachal Pradesh. His resignation was promptly accepted by Rajya Sabha Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankar, leaving the seat vacant with immediate effect.
The Rajya Sabha confirmed that Jagat Prakash Nadda, who served as an elected Member of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) representing Himachal Pradesh, has officially resigned from his seat. His resignation, effective from March 4, 2024, has been duly accepted by the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
JP Nadda’s resignation comes as he was elected unopposed to the upper house from Gujarat last month, alongside 56 other members whose terms were ending in April. He will now continue serving as a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat.
Having secured his position unopposed, Nadda was among the 41 candidates who emerged victorious in the recent Rajya Sabha elections, preceding the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha polls. His nomination as a BJP candidate from Gujarat was part of the party’s strategy, which resulted in four BJP candidates securing seats in the upper house from the state.
Notably, while JP Nadda’s tenure as BJP President has been extended until June, he previously served as the Union Health Minister from 2014 to 2019 before assuming the role of BJP’s National President on January 20, 2020.
Despite Himachal Pradesh being governed by the Congress party, the BJP managed to clinch the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state in the recent polls, further solidifying its political presence in the region.
