The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has granted approval for a Central Sector Scheme with a budget of Rs. 1261 Crore for the duration spanning 2024-25 to 2025-26. This scheme is designed to empower Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) by providing them with drones to offer rental services for agricultural activities. The primary objective is to align with the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, introducing new technologies through drone services in the agriculture sector.
Key Highlights of the Scheme:
- Holistic Interventions: The scheme integrates the efforts of the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (DA&FW), Department of Rural Development (DoRD), and Department of Fertilizers (DoF), along with Women SHGs and Lead Fertilizer Companies (LFCs).
- Cluster Identification: Suitable clusters where drone usage is economically feasible will be identified. Around 15,000 Women SHGs in various states will be selected in these clusters to provide drone services.
- Financial Assistance: Women SHGs will receive central financial assistance, covering 80% of the drone’s cost and associated charges, up to a maximum of Rs. Eight Lakh. The Cluster Level Federation (CLFs) of SHGs may raise the remaining amount through loans under the National Agriculture Infra Financing Facility, with a 3% interest subvention.
- Training and Skill Development: Elected members of SHGs will undergo a 15-day training program, including mandatory drone pilot training and additional training for agriculture-related applications. Another member or family member inclined towards repairs and maintenance will be trained as a drone technician/assistant.
- Role of Lead Fertilizer Companies: Acting as intermediaries, LFCs will facilitate the procurement, repair, and maintenance of drones through collaboration with drone supplier companies. They will also promote the use of Nano Fertilizers, such as Nano Urea and Nano DAP, through drone services.
- Business and Livelihood Support: The scheme envisions providing sustainable business and livelihood support to 15,000 SHGs, allowing them to earn an additional income of at least Rs. One Lakh per annum.
- Technological Advancements: By introducing drone technology, the scheme aims to infuse advanced agricultural practices, enhance crop yield, and reduce operational costs, ultimately benefiting farmers.
This initiative signifies a significant step towards leveraging technology for the empowerment of women in agriculture, fostering economic growth and sustainability in the sector.
