In the face of adversity brought on by recent natural disasters, the Central Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the state of Sikkim. The Government has pledged to provide all necessary assistance to help the state cope with the challenges posed by these calamities.
Immediate Financial Assistance
Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, have taken a proactive step by approving the release of both installments of the Central Share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to Sikkim. This amounts to Rs 44.80 crore for the year 2023-24. This financial aid will enable the state to implement relief measures and provide assistance to those affected by the recent natural disasters.
Assessment of Damages
In response to the Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF), Cloud Bursts, and Flash Floods that have struck the state, the Ministry of Home Affairs has set up an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT). This team will assess the extent of the damages incurred in the affected areas of Sikkim. Based on their assessment, additional Central assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) will be approved, following established procedures.
Recent Natural Disasters in Sikkim
On October 4, in the early hours, Sikkim experienced a sudden surge in flows in the Teesta River due to incidents of GLOF, Cloud Bursts, and Flash Floods. The aftermath of this event resulted in the destruction of several bridges, parts of NH-10, and the Chungthang Dam, and significant impacts on small towns and infrastructure projects in the upper reaches of the river valley.
Closely Monitored Situation
The Central Government is closely monitoring the situation in Sikkim around the clock. Immediate and extensive logistics support is being provided to supplement the efforts of the State Government in effectively managing the crisis. This support includes the deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, Indian Air Force helicopters, and Army personnel equipped with search and rescue equipment. Additionally, technical teams from the Ministries of Power, Telecommunications, and Roads, Highways & Transport are assisting in the timely restoration of damaged infrastructure and communication networks across the state.
In times of adversity, the Central Government’s swift response and commitment to providing aid underscore the unity and support extended to the people of Sikkim. Together, the nation stands strong to overcome the challenges posed by natural disasters and to help rebuild the affected communities and infrastructure in the state.
