Meghalaya: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has unveiled a series of grassroots initiatives aimed at bolstering farmers’ welfare, agriculture, and environmental conservation, with a combined investment of ₹400 crores. The projects, launched today, underscore the state government’s commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth.
Addressing the significance of these initiatives, CM Conrad K Sangma highlighted the launch of the MegARISE (Meghalaya Accelerated Irrigation Development and Sustainable Environment) project, aimed at safeguarding vulnerable catchment areas in the state. With a financial outlay of ₹344 crores, MegARISE is a crucial step towards implementing the State Water Policy. The project encompasses various measures, including capacity building of community members, enhancing forests and ecosystems in catchment areas, and improving livelihoods for vulnerable communities residing in these regions.
Furthermore, CM Conrad K Sangma outlined the objectives of the Meghalaya State Organic Mission 2.0, designed to promote organic cultivation and enhance farmers’ income. The mission aims to convert and sustain 100,000 hectares of land into the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP)-certified organic cultivation by 2029. Through increased productivity, premium prices, and value addition, the mission seeks to double farmers’ income, thereby fostering economic prosperity and environmental sustainability in the state.
“These initiatives reflect Meghalaya’s commitment to harnessing the potential of agriculture while preserving its rich natural heritage. By prioritizing sustainable practices and community engagement, the state government aims to create a conducive environment for farmers to thrive while ensuring the long-term ecological resilience of Meghalaya’s landscapes”.
CM Conrad K Sangma’s emphasis on grassroots projects underscores the importance of localized interventions in driving holistic development and addressing the unique challenges faced by rural communities. Through strategic investments and collaborative efforts, Meghalaya is poised to emerge as a model of sustainable development, where agriculture, environment, and livelihoods converge for the collective prosperity of its people.
