CM Himanta Biswa Announces Plans for New Universities in Assam Assembly Session.

Himanta Biswa, the Chief Minister of Assam, has announced his government’s commitment to improving higher education in the state. During the upcoming assembly session in August, the Government of Assam plans to introduce bills that will establish new universities in several prominent colleges across Assam. This proactive approach towards enhancing the educational landscape is a testament to the government’s dedication to providing quality education to the youth of Assam.

New Universities in Assam

  1. Sibsagar College: Sibsagar College, a renowned educational institution in Assam, is set to become a university under the proposed bill. This transition will pave the way for expanded academic programs and research opportunities, benefiting students and faculty alike.
  2. Kokrajhar Government College: Kokrajhar Government College is another institution that will witness the transformation into a university. The elevation of this college will open doors to diverse educational disciplines and encourage the pursuit of higher education within the region.
  3. Bongaigaon College: Bongaigaon College, known for its rich academic heritage, will also undergo a transition to university status. This step will enable the college to offer a wider range of courses, attract talented faculty, and contribute to the overall growth of the educational ecosystem in the region.
  4. J.B College-Jorhat: J.B College in Jorhat will join the League of Universities in Assam. This conversion will provide a platform for the college to expand its educational offerings and contribute significantly to the intellectual capital of the state.
  5. North Lakhimpur College: North Lakhimpur College is set to transform into a university, offering a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. This elevation will empower students to pursue their academic aspirations without having to leave their hometowns.
  6. Nagaon College: Nagaon College’s journey toward becoming a university will bolster educational opportunities in the region. The transformation will enhance the college’s capacity to cater to diverse academic disciplines and promote research and innovation.
  7. Gurucharan College: Gurucharan College’s transition into a university will unlock immense potential for students, faculty, and the community. The university status will facilitate collaborations, promote interdisciplinary studies, and contribute to the overall development of the region.

Challenges Faced by Handique College

While significant progress is being made in establishing new universities, the upgrading of Handique College will take longer due to challenges in land acquisition. The college currently does not possess adequate land for the proposed expansion. However, the government is actively engaged in finding suitable land for Handique College to proceed with its upgradation and transformation into a university. This delay does not diminish the government’s commitment to providing quality higher education in Assam.
