The significance of January 25 as National Voters’ Day stems from its commemoration as the foundation day of the Election Commission of India. To boost youth participation, the Government of India designated this day to celebrate the role of voters in democracy.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni reveals that the day aims to inspire newly eligible voters, especially those turning 18, to actively participate in the electoral process. The Election Commission has undertaken initiatives to identify and enroll eligible voters, providing them with an Electoral Photo Identity Card on January 25 annually.
The theme for National Voters’ Day 2016 is ‘Inclusive and qualitative participation,’ emphasizing the commitment to reach every voter and promote informed and ethical voting. The slogan ‘No Voter to be Left Behind’ highlights the focus on inclusiveness. National Awards are conferred to recognize excellence and innovation in election processes, showcasing the vibrant democratic spirit of India.
