Comparing Victory Margins: Modi’s 1.5 Lakh vs. Rahul’s 3.6 Lakh in Election Results 2024

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is on the brink of securing a third successive term in power at the center. However, the victory comes with a caveat, as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) failed to achieve the anticipated landslide triumph predicted by most exit polls. The Lok Sabha Elections 2024 results, announced on June 4, revealed that the NDA clinched 293 seats, while the opposition INDIA bloc secured 232 seats.

Within the 543-member Lok Sabha, the BJP alone secured 240 seats, falling short of the 303 seats won in 2019. Conversely, the Congress saw an improvement, securing 99 seats, nearly double its 2019 tally, as confirmed by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Modi’s Margin Narrows:

Prime Minister Modi retained the Varanasi seat in Uttar Pradesh for the third consecutive time, albeit with a reduced margin. Modi secured victory by 1,52,513 votes, with 6,12,970 votes, while his Congress rival, Ajay Rai, received 4,60,457 votes. The Bahujan Samaj Party candidate, Ather Jamal Lari, finished third with 33,766 votes. Modi’s victory margin in 2024 pales in comparison to the 2014 and 2019 elections.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Modi defeated Shalini Yadav of the Samajwadi Party by a margin of 6,74,664 votes, securing 63.62 percent of the total votes in Varanasi. In the 2014 elections, Modi’s victory margin exceeded 4 lakh votes when he defeated Aam Aadmi Party leader and now Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Rahul’s Double Delight:

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi achieved significant victories in Raebareli and Wayanad, the two seats he contested in 2024. Winning Raebareli by a margin of 3,89,341 votes, Rahul surpassed his mother Sonia Gandhi’s 2019 victory margin of 1,67,178 votes. In Wayanad, Rahul secured victory with a margin of 3,64,422 votes, a significant improvement from his 2019 win with a margin of over 4.3 lakh votes.

As the BJP prepares for another term under Modi’s leadership, albeit with a narrower margin, and Rahul Gandhi celebrates his double victories, the dynamics of Indian politics continue to evolve, setting the stage for future political strategies and alliances.
