The Central Election Committee approved Namgyal’s candidature, highlighting the party’s resolve to compete vigorously.

In the 2019 elections, BJP’s Jamyang Tsering Namgyal emerged victorious in Ladakh, securing a significant mandate with 42,914 votes and 33.9% of votes. However, independent candidate Sajjad Hussain also garnered substantial support with 31,984 votes.
The political landscape in Ladakh has undergone significant changes since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, leading to the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. The people of Ladakh have been vocal in their demands for statehood and inclusion under the 6th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, as well as stronger ecological protections.
With Ladakh scheduled to go to polls on May 20, the announcement of candidates by major political parties sets the stage for an intense electoral battle in the region.
