Cyclone DANA: Impact on Weather Systems Across India

The severe cyclonic storm Cyclone Dana has continued to affect weather systems across various regions in India, with significant warnings issued for the eastern coastlines. With a projected path through Odisha and West Bengal, Cyclone Dana is expected to bring intense rainfall and strong winds, causing widespread impacts.

1. Cyclone Dana’s Current Position and Movement

As of 24th October 2024, Cyclone Dana moved north-northwestwards over the Bay of Bengal at a speed of 13 kmph. Centered at 19.8° N latitude and 87.5° E longitude, Cyclone Dana is currently located approximately 100 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha) and 210 km southwest of Sagar Island (West Bengal). It is forecast to cross the coast between Puri and Sagar Island, causing severe weather conditions as it makes landfall.

2. Heavy Rainfall Warnings for East India

Due to Cyclonic Storm Dana, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Odisha and West Bengal. Districts such as Baleswar, Bhadrak, and Mayurbhanj are likely to experience rainfall exceeding 21 cm over the next few days. Similar warnings have been issued for Gangetic West Bengal, including Kolkata, as the storm moves inland. The intensity of Cyclone Dana is likely to cause widespread disruption in these areas.

3. Impact on Southern Peninsular India

Although Cyclone primarily affects the eastern regions, southern parts of India, including Tamil Nadu and Kerala, are also witnessing moderate rainfall due to the storm’s indirect influence. Heavy rains are predicted for Kerala and Mahe over the next two days, with potential thunderstorms in the coastal regions. Cyclone Dana’s presence has extended its reach beyond the east coast, impacting weather patterns across the south.

4. Minimal Impact on Central and Northwest India

Central, West, and Northwest India are unlikely to experience significant rainfall due to Cyclone Dana. These regions are expected to remain mostly dry for the rest of the week. However, the cyclonic system continues to be monitored for any potential changes in its trajectory that could alter the current forecast.

Cyclone Dana remains a critical weather event, with authorities issuing warnings for affected regions. Residents in the path of the cyclone are advised to stay updated with official alerts and prepare for potential disruptions.
