Cyclone Hamoon in the Bay of Bengal: Tracking its Path and Intensity

Cyclone Hamoon, a weather system brewing over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, has been making its presence felt with its steadily advancing path and intensification. As of 24th October at 0530 hrs IST, Cyclone Hamoon is centered over the same region, approximately 230 km east-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 240 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal), and 280 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).

One of the notable aspects of this cyclonic phenomenon is its speed. Cyclone Hamoon has been moving northeastwards at a brisk pace of 21 kmph, which has kept meteorological experts on alert and residents in the potentially affected regions on their toes.

“What makes the situation even more significant is the likelihood of Cyclone Hamoon intensifying further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) within the next six hours. This heightened intensity could bring about a series of challenges for the coastal areas in its trajectory”.

“However, the future path of Cyclone Hamoon is not without its twists and turns. The system is anticipated to gradually weaken as it continues its northeastward movement. Eventually, it is projected to make landfall along the Bangladesh coast, specifically between Khepupara and Chittagong, on the evening of 25 October”.

The anticipated wind speed during the landfall is expected to range from 65 to 75 kmph, which implies the potential for cyclonic storm conditions in these coastal regions. This underscores the importance of preparedness and vigilance for the local populations, as well as the necessity for timely updates and alerts from meteorological authorities.

“Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal region are a common meteorological occurrence, and their intensity and impact can vary widely. As Cyclone Hamoon continues to evolve, its movements and intensification will be closely monitored to provide timely information and assistance to those in its path. It is crucial for residents and authorities in the potentially affected areas to heed the warnings and stay updated on the latest developments, ensuring the safety and security of all”.
