Delhi NCR Shaken by Strong Earthquake with Intensity 6.2, Prolonged Tremors Reported

On a Tuesday afternoon, North India, including Delhi-NCR, experienced intense tremors from a powerful earthquake. The seismic activity was so pronounced that tremors persisted for an extended duration, prompting people to rush out of their homes and offices onto the streets. Reports indicate that the earthquake’s epicenter was located in Nepal, but its effects were felt across a wide swath of North India, reaching as far as Khatima in Uttarakhand.

Dual Earthquake Events

According to the National Seismology Centre, not one but two earthquakes occurred within a relatively short time span. The first earthquake struck at 2.25 pm, with an intensity of 4.6 on the Richter scale. Approximately half an hour later, at 2.51 p.m., a second, even more powerful earthquake with an intensity of 6.2 occurred. These intense tremors compelled people to evacuate their homes and seek safety outdoors.

Understanding Earthquakes

Earth’s upper surface comprises seven tectonic plates that interact in various ways. Where these plates converge or collide, there is a heightened risk of earthquakes. Earthquakes result from the intense pressure when tectonic plates attempt to intrude into each other’s territories, causing them to grind against one another and release immense energy. This energy, in the form of seismic waves, triggers the shaking of the Earth’s surface, which can range from mild tremors to violent quakes that cause significant damage.

Aftershocks and Seismic Activity

The aftermath of a strong earthquake can include a series of aftershocks. These aftershocks occur as the Earth’s crust continues to adjust to the energy released from the initial quake. They can last for weeks or even months, keeping the affected region on edge and requiring vigilance.

The recent seismic activity in North India serves as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability to earthquakes due to its proximity to tectonic plate boundaries. The occurrence of two powerful earthquakes in quick succession underscores the importance of earthquake preparedness and safety measures for residents and authorities in earthquake-prone areas. Staying informed and knowing how to respond during such events can make a significant difference in reducing risks and ensuring public safety.
