Dense Fog and Cold Days: Weather Warnings Across India

As we step into mid-January 2024, a noteworthy weather event is on the horizon – a Western Disturbance poised to influence the Western Himalayan Region. This meteorological phenomenon is expected to bring diverse weather conditions to different parts of northern and eastern India.

Western Disturbance Impact:

Starting from January 16, 2024, the Western Disturbance is likely to induce light rainfall and snowfall in isolated areas over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh on the 16th and 17th. Uttarakhand can anticipate similar weather patterns on the 17th and 18th of January.

Precipitation Across Eastern States:

Moving eastward, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Sikkim, along with Northeast India, are expected to witness light to moderate rainfall in isolated places from the 16th to the 18th of January 2024. Furthermore, there’s a possibility of isolated hailstorms over Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim on the 17th of January.

Dense Fog and Cold Day Warnings:

The upcoming days bring challenges beyond precipitation, with dense fog warnings issued for several regions. Punjab and Haryana, including Chandigarh & Delhi, are likely to experience dense to very dense fog conditions during the night/morning hours from the 15th to the 17th and in some parts on the 17th night & 18th morning. A continuation of dense fog in isolated pockets is expected for the subsequent two days.

Uttar Pradesh and Bihar should brace for dense to very dense fog during the night/morning from the 15th to the 17th, with isolated pockets witnessing dense fog for the following three days.

Additionally, isolated pockets in Jharkhand may experience dense fog from the 15th to the 19th, while Uttarakhand, north Rajasthan, north Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim may face dense fog from the 15th to the 17th. Meanwhile, Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura are likely to encounter dense fog on the 15th & 16th of January 2024.

Cold Day Conditions:

Finally, cold day to severe cold day conditions are expected in various parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh on the 15th & 16th, with cold day conditions in some parts on the 17th. Uttar Pradesh is likely to experience cold day to severe cold day conditions on the 15th and in isolated pockets on the 16th, while isolated pockets in Bihar can expect the same on the 15th & 16th of January. Isolated pockets of West Bengal & Sikkim should also prepare for cold day conditions on the 15th of January 2024.

In light of these varied weather predictions, residents and travelers are advised to stay updated on local forecasts and take necessary precautions to navigate the complex weather conditions expected in the coming days.
