Dev Anand (Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand) was an Indian actor, writer, director, and producer known for his work in Hindi cinema. His career spanned over six decades. He was one of the most successful actors in Indian cinema and a part of “Trinity- The Golden Trio” along with Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar.
The Government of India honoured him with the ”Dadasaheb Phalke Award” in 2002 and the ”Padma Bhushan” in 2001 for his contribution to Indian cinema. He has won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor twice, as well as Filmfare’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993.
Early life:
Dharam Dev Anand, who would later be known as Anand, was born on 26 September 1923 in the Shakargarh tehsil of the Gurdaspur district in Punjab (British India). Pishori Lal Anand, his father, was a well-to-do advocate in Gurdaspur District Court. Anand had four sons and Dev was the third born. Sheel Kanta Kapur, one of Dev’s younger sisters, is the mother of film director Shekhar Kapur.
His brothers were Manmohan Anand, an advocate in the Gurdaspur District Courts, and Chetan Anand and the younger one was Vijay Anand. He attended Sacred Heart School in Dalhousie (then in Punjab) until he completed matriculation. Dev completed a B.A. degree in English Literature from the Government College, Lahore in British India.
Personal life:
Although Anand and Suraiya were in love with each other from 1948 to 1951, they never got married because Suraiya’s maternal grandmother opposed their relationship. Suraiya remained unmarried throughout her life and died on 31 January 2004.
In 1954, Dev married Mona Singha (also known as Kalpana Kartik), a Bollywood actress from Shimla, in a private ceremony while they were both working on the film Taxi Driver. They have two children, a son named Suneil and a daughter named Devina.
