In a recent announcement, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy, and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh shed light on Jammu and Kashmir’s transformation into a burgeoning agri start-up hub. He emphasized that the Republic Day tableau at Kartavya Path, showcasing lavender farms in Bhaderwah, signifies the region’s recognition as the birthplace of the “Purple Revolution.” This agricultural success story is not only gaining national acclaim but also inspiring other Himalayan States like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Nagaland.

Bhaderwah: The Epicenter of Agri Innovation

Dr. Singh highlighted that the foundation of this agri start-up hub has been laid in the enchanting town of Bhaderwah in district Doda, Jammu and Kashmir. Lavender cultivation has taken center stage, thanks to the Aroma Mission initiated by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi extensively shared this success story during his “Mann Ki Baat” broadcast, underscoring the experimental efforts in Bhaderwah.

According to Dr. Singh, this agri start-up hub provides India with an alternative source to boost its economy. Over 3,000 successful lavender entrepreneurs from Bhaderwah are not only transforming the agricultural landscape but also presenting the youth of India with a lucrative avenue for start-ups through agriculture. This unique domain is poised to contribute significant value addition to India’s future economic growth, aligning with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.

Addressing a Kisan Sammelan organized by CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine in Hiranagar, Kathua, the Union Minister expressed delight at the recent depiction of Bhaderwah’s lavender farms on Kartavya Path during the Republic Day celebrations. Dr. Singh considered it a success story, noting that over 3,000 youth in Jammu and Kashmir are actively engaged in lavender cultivation. This mission has not only become a pathway to self-employment but has also enabled these youngsters to earn significant incomes in lakhs.

Inspiration for Other States

Dr. Singh proudly stated that the success of the Aroma Mission has inspired other states, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Nagaland, to initiate lavender cultivation. This expansion marks a pivotal moment in agricultural diversification, showcasing the ripple effect of a successful model.

Prime Minister’s Vision and Start-Up Revolution

Reminiscing about Prime Minister Modi’s clarion call for “Startup India, Stand Up India” from the historic Red Fort, Dr. Singh credited the Prime Minister for sparking a movement. The number of start-ups in India has surged past 1.25 lakh, a remarkable increase from a mere 350 at the beginning of this initiative. This achievement positions India as the third-largest player in the global start-up arena.

Dr. Singh urged the youth to actively join the agri start-up ecosystem. By contributing to value addition in the economy, the youth can play a crucial role in realizing the national goal of making India the number one economy in the next 25 years of Amrit Kaal.
