On the 30th of January, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya Virtually addresses an event to mark National Anti-Leprosy Day. He said, “Emphasized the importance of working with the whole Government, and the whole of society’s support, synergy & cooperation to achieve the target of Leprosy Mukt Bharat by 2027, 3 years ahead of the SDG”.

The number of new leprosy cases in India is declining every year, signifying the country’s progress. We can achieve the target of Leprosy Mukt Bharat by 2027, three years ahead of the SDG, with the whole government, and the whole of society’s support, synergy, and cooperation.

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, said this during his video address at a program organized to celebrate National Anti-Leprosy Day. This year’s theme is “Let us fight leprosy and make leprosy history.”

Reiterating the abiding concern of Mahatma Gandhi for the people affected by leprosy, the Union Health Minister said that the concern and commitment to curing leprosy have its roots in our history. “His approach was not only to cure them but also to bring them into the mainstream of our society.

Our effort to eliminate leprosy from this country under the National Leprosy Eradication Program is a great tribute to his vision. We have been able to achieve a national prevalence rate of 1 case per 10,000 population in 2005. Continuous efforts to eradicate leprosy are the need of the hour.

It is a curable disease, however, if it is not detected and treated at an early stage, it can cause permanent disability and disfigurement among the affected person, leading to the social isolation of such persons in the community and their family members.

“We have adopted comprehensive measures for the prevention of disease under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.” He said that from 2016, renewed efforts were made to actively detect cases under Leprosy Case Detection Campaign (LCDC).

Our National Leprosy Eradication Program strives to detect and treat cases as early as possible, give free treatment to prevent the development of disabilities and deformities, and provide medical rehabilitation to those with existing deformities,” Union Minister Dr. Bharti Praveen Pawar said. Patients undergoing reconstructive surgery will now get a welfare allowance of Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000.
