The nation celebrates its Independence Day on July 12, commemorating the day in 1975 when it gained freedom from Portuguese colonial rule. São Tomé and Príncipe consist of two archipelagos centered around its largest islands. With a population of approximately 200,000, it is Africa’s second-smallest sovereign state and the world’s smallest Portuguese-speaking country. Despite its size, São Tomé and Príncipe showcase rich cultural diversity and natural beauty.
The islands of São Tomé and Príncipe were uninhabited until Portuguese explorers João de Santarém and Pêro Escobar arrived in the late 15th century. SãoSão Tomé is said to have been discovered on December 21, 1471, while Príncipe was believed to have been discovered on January 17, 1472. Príncipe was initially named Santo Antão after Saint Anthony but was later renamed Ilha do Príncipe, meaning “Prince’s Island,” in honor of the Prince of Portugal.
