Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, the esteemed Governor of Telangana, inaugurated the “National Conference on Gender, Health & Sustainable Development: Global and National Perspectives” at Pondicherry University. The conference, organized by the Department of Sociology, Pondicherry University, and the Indian Association for Social Sciences and Health, was held in Puducherry.
In her address, Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan passionately highlighted the significance of gender equality, asserting that true equality is achieved when men and women enjoy the same rights and opportunities across all societal sectors, including economic participation and decision-making. She emphasized the need for equal valuation and favoring of different behaviors, aspirations, and needs of both genders.
Furthermore, Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan clarified that while gender neutrality and gender equity are essential practices, gender equality remains the ultimate goal. It goes beyond mere representation and necessitates policy changes to ensure women’s rights are upheld in every aspect of life.
Recalling the welfare initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan commended the addition of Caesarean operation surgeries in Ayushman Bharat and the establishment of wellness clinics in Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the nation. These initiatives aim to provide accessible and affordable healthcare, particularly benefiting the economically disadvantaged.
The conference serves as a platform for discussions on gender, health, and sustainable development, addressing global and national perspectives. Dr. Soundararajan’s insights and emphasis on gender equality and women’s rights contribute significantly to ongoing dialogues around fostering inclusive and sustainable societies. The incorporation of Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives underscores the holistic approach to women’s welfare and healthcare in the national agenda.
