The Defence Research and Development Organisation is the premier agency charged with the military’s research and development in the Ministry of Defence of the Government of India, headquartered in Delhi, India. The Defence Science Organisation was formed in 1958 by the merger of the Technical Development Establishment and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production of the Indian Ordnance Factories.
After that, DRDS was set up in 1979 as a service for Group ‘A’ Officers / Scientists who report directly to the Ministry of Defence. With 52 laboratories engaged in developing defence technologies covering various fields like aeronautics, armaments, electronics, land combat engineering, life sciences, materials, missiles, and naval systems, DRDO is India’s largest and most diverse research organisation. The organisation includes around 5,000 scientists belonging to the DRDS and about 25,000 other subordinate scientific, technical, and support personnel.

History of DRDO:-
– It was established in 1958 by combining three major defence organizations,
- Defence Science Organisation (DSO)
- Defence Technical Development Establishment (DTDE)
- Directorate of Technical Development and Production (DTDP)
– Project Indigo, the DRDO’s first major defence project, was a 1960 project on Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM). This project was discontinued without any success. DRDO started with just 10 different laboratories across the nation and now has more than 50 labs researching different sectors of technology and defence.
