DRI officials seize 4 leopard skins in J&K’s Srinagar

In a determined effort to curb the illegal wildlife trade, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) initiated a well-planned operation after gathering specific intelligence over a considerable period. The operation targeted criminal gangs operating in Srinagar, Jammu, and Kashmir (J&K), suspected to be involved in the illegal trade of leopard skins.

Undercover officers from the Mumbai Zonal Unit (Goa Regional Unit) assumed the role of prospective buyers and infiltrated the illegal trade network in Srinagar, J&K. After a series of negotiations, the first breakthrough was achieved when the sellers presented a leopard skin at a predetermined location near Dalgate. Vigilant surveillance led to the interception of an individual carrying the illicit contraband, followed by the apprehension of another accomplice at a public area in Srinagar.

Further negotiations ensued, leading to the identification of another gang of sellers. Following extensive negotiations, the sellers agreed to deliver three leopard skins to a predetermined spot. Prompt action by law enforcement led to the interception of three individuals in possession of the smuggled goods, with leads indicating the presence of three more individuals connected to the transaction at a nearby public place.

In total, eight individuals, including a serving police constable, were apprehended for their involvement in the illegal wildlife trade. The operation resulted in the recovery of four leopard skins (Panthera pardus), believed to have been poached from various regions including Ladakh, Doda, and Uri.

The confiscated leopard skins were seized under the provisions of section 50(1)(c) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, as amended. The successful operation not only underscores the commitment of the DRI to combat wildlife trafficking but also highlights the critical importance of collaborative efforts to safeguard the precious biodiversity of the region.
