Earthquake of Magnitude 4.1 Strikes Near Kathmandu: NCS Report

On August 29, 2023, at 10:13:33 IST, a seismic event shook the region near Kathmandu, Nepal. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) has reported the earthquake to have a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale. The occurrence, depth, and location of the earthquake were shared by the NCS in an official statement.

The earthquake’s epicenter was situated at a latitude of 28.95 and a longitude of 83.26. The seismic activity originated at a depth of 10 kilometers below the earth’s surface. The location of the earthquake was identified as being 244 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu, Nepal.

“While the earthquake’s magnitude of 4.1 indicates a relatively moderate level of seismic activity, it serves as a reminder of the region’s susceptibility to earthquakes due to its geographical location. Earthquakes can have varying impacts depending on factors such as depth, location, and the local infrastructure’s resilience”.

The NCS’s prompt reporting and dissemination of information highlight the importance of real-time data in assessing and responding to seismic events. While this earthquake’s magnitude was relatively low, staying informed about such events remains crucial for individuals, communities, and authorities to ensure appropriate safety measures are taken.

“As seismic events are a natural occurrence and part of the Earth’s dynamic processes, ongoing vigilance, preparedness, and adherence to safety protocols are vital in regions prone to earthquakes. The NCS’s continuous monitoring and reporting contribute to enhancing the understanding of seismic activity and facilitating informed decision-making for the well-being of those living in earthquake-prone areas”.
