The Election Commission of India (ECI) recently announced a bye-election in Lakshadweep (ST) PC of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, along with six Assembly Constituencies in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.
The date of the poll was fixed for 27th February 2023, with counting scheduled for 2nd March 2023. The bye-election was called due to the disqualification of Shri Mohammed Faizal P.P. on the grounds of conviction by a court of sessions in Kavaratti, Lakshadweep.
However, Shri Mohammed Faizal P.P. filed an appeal in the Honorable Kerala High Court and the court passed an order on 25th January 2023, suspending his conviction and sentence.
Taking into account the order passed by the Honorable Kerala High Court, the ECI has decided to withhold the bye-election and defer the issuance of the notification for the same.
The bye-election in Lakshadweep (ST) PC of UT of Lakshadweep has been deferred due to the suspension of the conviction and sentence of Shri Mohammed Faizal P.P. by the Honorable Kerala High Court. The ECI will issue a new press note with updated information about the bye-election at a later date.
