ECL Embarks on Innovative Underground Coal Gasification Pilot Project

Coal Gasification Pilot Project: Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), under the guidance of the Ministry of Coal, initiates an innovative Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) project in Jharkhand’s Kasta coal block, marking a milestone in India’s coal industry.

Coal Gasification Pilot Project: Pioneering Coal Gasification Initiative

Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) has launched a groundbreaking pilot project for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) at the Kasta coal block in Jamtara District, Jharkhand. This strategic initiative, directed by the Ministry of Coal, aims to transform the coal industry by converting in-situ coal into valuable gases like methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. These gases can be utilized for various industrial applications, including the production of synthetic natural gas, fuels, fertilizers, and explosives.

Significant Advantages and Potential

Underground Coal Gasification offers substantial advantages by accessing coal resources that are economically unviable through traditional mining methods. This project represents a significant milestone for Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries, positioning India as a leader in advanced coal gasification technologies. The Ministry of Coal is committed to promoting these projects, recognizing their potential to transform coal into high-value chemical products.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Prospects

This ambitious R&D project, funded by the CIL R&D Board, exemplifies collaboration between Eastern Coalfields Ltd and Ergo Exergy as sub-implementing agencies. This strategic project enhances energy security and promotes sustainable development, aiming to establish new standards in coal resource utilization. As the project progresses, it is expected to create transformative opportunities for India’s energy sector, contributing significantly to the nation’s journey towards energy self-reliance.
