Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) has launched a groundbreaking pilot project for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) at the Kasta coal block in Jamtara District, Jharkhand. This strategic initiative, directed by the Ministry of Coal, aims to transform the coal industry by converting in-situ coal into valuable gases like methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. These gases can be utilized for various industrial applications, including the production of synthetic natural gas, fuels, fertilizers, and explosives.

Underground Coal Gasification offers substantial advantages by accessing coal resources that are economically unviable through traditional mining methods. This project represents a significant milestone for Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries, positioning India as a leader in advanced coal gasification technologies. The Ministry of Coal is committed to promoting these projects, recognizing their potential to transform coal into high-value chemical products.
