On the 15th of December, the founder, CEO, and chief engineer of SpaceX, angel investor, CEO and product architect of Tesla shared a post based on doxxing and wrote, “Any account doxxing real-time location info of anyone will be suspended, as it is a physical safety violation. This includes posting links to sites with real-time location info but Posting locations someone traveled to on a slightly delayed basis isn’t a safety problem, so is ok.”
Jack Sweeney, a Florida college student, and aviation enthusiast run the account. Jack Sweeney also ran alike “bot” accounts tracking other celebrities’ airplanes. Other Sweeney-run accounts tracking private jets used by Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and various Russian oligarchs were still live on Twitter for hours after the suspension of the @elonjet account.
Twitter suspended all of them, including Sweeney’s personal account, later on, Wednesday. He also operates accounts on rival social platforms such as Facebook and Instagram that track Musk’s jet.
Know about “doxxing”
Doxing, also spelled doxxing, is the act of publicly providing personally identifiable information about an individual or organization, usually via the internet. The term has been used interchangeably to refer to both the aggregation of this information from public sources or record databases and social media websites (like Facebook), as well as the publication of previously private information obtained through criminal or otherwise fraudulent means such as hacking and social engineering.
Though subject to laws concerning stalking and intimidation, the aggregation and provision of previously published material as distinct from publication is generally a legal practice. Reasons for doxing may include online shaming, extortion, and providing aid to law enforcement through vigilantism.
