Struggle for Employment: 36% of Recent IIT Bombay Graduates Remain Unplaced

IIT Bombay Graduates: Recent months have witnessed some of the world’s leading companies resorting to mass layoffs and implementing hiring freezes, contributing to a challenging job market scenario. Despite the spotlight on IIT and IIM “100% placement” news, the latest batch of students at IIT Bombay faces a notable setback, with 36% failing to secure placements, sparking concerns about unemployment in India.

Out of approximately 2,000 students who registered for the 2024 placements, a staggering 36%, or 712 students, are yet to find jobs. Notably, IIT Bombay, ranked among the top institutes in India, is grappling with this issue, shedding light on the complexities of the current job market situation.

An official from IIT Bombay’s placement cell attributed the difficulties in inviting companies to campus to the global economic meltdown, leading many companies to hesitate in accepting pre-decided salary packages. Even the computer science and engineering branch, typically achieving a 100 percent placement rate, has fallen short of this target this year, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the challenges faced.

While the institute aims to maintain high average salary packages, concerns arise regarding the alignment of this focus with the diverse needs and aspirations of students, contributing to complexities in the placement process. Despite initial reports of high salary packages, the reality has been different, with only a fraction of students receiving such offers.

In light of these developments, stakeholders must collaborate to devise strategies that address the evolving needs of students and the realities of the current job market situation. Social media reactions underscore the gravity of the situation, reflecting widespread concern about the challenges faced by graduates in securing employment opportunities.

As the dynamics of the job market continue to evolve, it becomes imperative for institutions and policymakers to adapt and respond effectively to ensure a sustainable and inclusive job market environment for all stakeholders.
