About EPFO: India’s Premier Social Security Organization
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is one of India’s primary social security organizations, operating under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. It holds the responsibility for regulating and managing provident funds across the country, with the Employees’ State Insurance being the other major player in this field.
EPFO oversees key programs such as the mandatory provident fund, a fundamental pension scheme, and a disability/death insurance scheme. Additionally, it manages bilateral social security agreements with various foreign nations, offering coverage to international workers in countries where such agreements have been established. As of May 2021, there were 19 such agreements in effect.
The highest decision-making authority within the EPFO is the Central Board of Trustees (CBT), a statutory body established by the Employees’ Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions (EPF&MP) Act of 1952. In 2018, EPFO was responsible for managing more than ₹11 lakh crore (US$157.8 billion) in funds.
On October 1, 2014, the Government of India introduced a Universal Account Number for EPFO-covered employees, facilitating portability of Provident Fund account numbers.
