‘Bahi-Khata’: In a blend of tradition and modernity, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman showcased a digital tablet wrapped in a traditional ‘bahi-khata‘ style pouch ahead of the Budget presentation at Parliament. Dressed in a white silk saree with a magenta border, Sitharaman continued her practice of departing from the colonial briefcase tradition, which she first adopted in July 2019.
Sitharaman, India’s first full-time woman Finance Minister, replaced the traditional papers with a digital tablet during the pandemic-hit 2021, marking a significant shift in how Budget documents are presented. As the Budget 2024 approaches, it is expected to address tax reforms, with potential changes in income tax slabs and rates to provide relief to the middle class, especially in light of upcoming state Assembly elections.
This year’s Budget will be closely scrutinized as India maintains its status as the fastest-growing major economy amidst global economic uncertainties. The announcements will be pivotal, particularly since the first Budget of a new government often involves challenging decisions.
