Gadkari Inaugurates International Methanol Seminar, Advocates for Sustainable Energy Solutions

International Methanol Seminar: Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, inaugurated the International Methanol Seminar and Expo organized by NITI Aayog in New Delhi today. The event was attended by prominent figures including Sh. Suman Bery, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog; Sh. V K Saraswat, Member of NITI Aayog; and Sh. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India. During the event, Shri Gadkari explored the expo showcasing various methanol-based products and machinery.

Addressing Pollution and Fossil Fuel Imports: International Methanol Seminar

In his address, Gadkari highlighted two pressing issues: the rising levels of pollution and the substantial import of fossil fuels. He pointed out the need to reduce these imports, which cost India approximately ₹22 lakh crore, particularly amid ongoing global geopolitical uncertainties. Emphasizing energy independence, Gadkari called for a transition towards alternative fuels like methanol, ethanol, and bio-CNG to mitigate the challenges posed by fossil fuel reliance.

The Minister underscored the importance of biofuels in enhancing India’s energy independence and supporting the agricultural economy. He noted that advancements in the biofuel sector, particularly methanol, are crucial for the prosperity of farmers. Gadkari mentioned that using low-quality coal, which is accessible in certain states, could contribute to methanol production, further reinforcing the benefits of this sustainable fuel.

Innovations in Waste Management: International Methanol Seminar

Shri Gadkari discussed innovative approaches to waste management, highlighting the concept of converting waste into wealth. He revealed that materials such as used tyre powder and plastic are being incorporated into road construction, which aids in reducing bitumen imports. The Union Minister also pointed out that utilizing crop waste not only helps in environmental conservation but also boosts farmers’ incomes across the nation.

Combating Stubble Burning and Promoting Bio-CNG

Addressing the issue of stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana, Gadkari emphasized the need for better planning to process agricultural residue. Currently, only one-fifth of the stubble can be processed, but he believes that utilizing this biomass as a raw material for alternative fuels could significantly reduce seasonal air pollution. He urged for a comprehensive policy that is cost-effective, indigenous, and focused on generating employment while addressing pollution and fossil fuel import challenges.
