Union Minister Gajendra Singh Inaugurates New Museum at Humayun’s Tomb

Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, inaugurated the new Humayun’s Tomb World Heritage Site Museum in New Delhi. This state-of-the-art facility, covering 100,000 square feet, was unveiled in the presence of dignitaries, including Prince Rahim Aga Khan. The museum aims to enhance understanding and appreciation of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Union Minister Gajendra Singh: Design and Collaboration

The museum, a collaboration between the Archaeological Survey of India and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), is inspired by Delhi’s ancient ‘Baolis’ or stepped wells. Its underground design preserves the visual integrity of the Humayun’s Tomb complex while offering a comprehensive cultural context in line with UNESCO’s recommendations for World Heritage sites.

Rich Artefact Collection

Featuring over 500 artefacts from the National Museum, Archaeological Survey of India, and AKTC, the museum includes Mughal miniatures, manuscripts, architectural elements from Humayun’s Mausoleum, coins, and more. Highlights include the original copper finial of the tomb and various historical inscriptions and artifacts, narrating 700 years of Delhi’s history through rigorous research.

Museum’s Vision and Impact

In his inaugural address, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat emphasized the museum’s role in aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of integrating development with heritage. The museum is designed to enhance visitor experience and provide educational insights into the cultural significance of Delhi’s historical monuments. With support from various donors and a commitment to management by AKTC, the museum is set to become a key educational and cultural landmark.
