Gulmarg Gondola Records Over a Million Riders in 2023-24

Gulmarg Gondola, nestled in the deep Himalayas near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, has achieved a remarkable milestone in the financial year 2023-24 by hosting over a million tourists and locals for the first time since its inception in 1998.

The Jammu and Kashmir tourism department announced this feat, highlighting the cable car’s pivotal role in driving tourism growth in the region. In a post on the micro-blogging platform X, the department celebrated the achievement, stating that the revenue from the Gulmarg Gondola surpassed ₹110 crore, marking an unprecedented surge in tourism earnings.

Former assistant director of tourism, Javed ur Rehman, emphasized the iconic status of the Gulmarg Gondola, noting that tourists consider their visit to Gulmarg incomplete without experiencing the thrilling cable car ride. The Gondola, rising to an altitude of 13,500 ft, offers panoramic views of the breathtaking Pir Panjal mountain range and the picturesque valley below, making it a must-visit destination for travelers.

The revenue generated by the Cable Car Corporation operating the Gulmarg Gondola witnessed significant growth, reaching nearly ₹100 crore in the previous financial year (2022-23), compared to ₹47.81 crore in 2020-21. This substantial increase underscores the growing popularity of Gulmarg as a premier tourist destination in Kashmir.

Known as the “meadow of flowers,” Gulmarg boasts virgin peaks, pristine snow, and vast meadows, attracting tourists from across the globe. Situated approximately 50km from Srinagar, the region offers a unique blend of natural beauty and adventure, making it a favorite among travelers seeking memorable experiences.

The Gulmarg Gondola stands as the flagship attraction of Kashmir tourism, offering visitors an unforgettable journey to Asia’s highest operating cable car. Its success in attracting over a million riders in the financial year 2023-24 not only reflects its growing popularity but also underscores its significance in driving tourism and economic growth in the picturesque region of Kashmir.
