The Union Health Minister, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, took center stage at the 76th session of the World Health Organization Regional Committee for South-East Asia. Joined by several esteemed health ministers and representatives from various countries, the meeting served as a platform to underscore the nation’s healthcare initiatives and collaborative endeavors in the region.
Dr. Mandaviya, elected as the Chairperson of the session, reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision that “health is the ultimate wealth,” emphasizing India’s commitment to an inclusive and comprehensive healthcare approach. He highlighted the success of Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWC) in providing primary healthcare services to millions, with remarkable statistics revealing over 2.1 billion footfalls and millions benefiting from free drugs and diagnostic services.
The Minister stressed the impact of initiatives like Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission and PM-ABHIM in revolutionizing the healthcare delivery system, enhancing digital health frameworks, and strengthening physical infrastructure.
Additionally, the ceremony at the WHO SEARO building site in New Delhi marked a significant milestone, symbolizing collaborative efforts between India and WHO to address global health challenges. Dr. Mandaviya mentioned India’s substantial contribution of Rs. 239.5 crores to support this endeavor, envisioning a hub for research, knowledge exchange, and innovative solutions in healthcare.
“The Union Health Secretary, Shri Sudhansh Pant, emphasized the establishment of the South-East Asia Regional Forum for primary healthcare-oriented Health Systems, indicating a pivotal moment in fostering collaborative support among member states”.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, addressed the gathering virtually, emphasizing the critical timing of the session in addressing global health challenges. He acknowledged the efforts of member countries in combatting diseases and specifically commended India’s achievements in operationalizing healthcare centers and hypertension control initiatives.
With the presence of senior government officials and WHO representatives, the event showcased a collective commitment to advancing healthcare systems and initiatives in the Southeast Asia region.
