The United Arab Emirates (UAE) experienced heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday, resulting in significant disruptions across the country. Flight cancellations, school closures, and work-from-home directives were enforced as authorities responded to the adverse weather conditions.
The Meteorological Department (MeT) issued an orange alert as heavy rains and thunderstorms battered the UAE. In response, authorities instructed schools to initiate distance learning and companies to facilitate remote work for employees. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) announced that these measures applied to all private schools, nurseries, and universities.
Dubai’s government also mandated work-from-home arrangements for government employees on May 2 and May 3. Additionally, parks and beaches were closed as a precautionary measure.
The aviation sector was particularly affected, with Emirates and Flydubai cancelling several flights due to the inclement weather. IndiGo, Vistara, and SpiceJet reported disruptions to flight operations in Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Abu Dhabi.
This latest bout of heavy rainfall comes after last month’s record-breaking downpour, which overwhelmed the UAE’s drainage systems. The flooding caused extensive damage, with many residents losing belongings and vehicles submerged. Dubai International Airport, a key hub for international travel, faced challenges, requiring 22 tankers with vacuum pumps to remove water from its grounds.
As the UAE grapples with the aftermath of the recent deluge, authorities are working to mitigate the impact and ensure the safety and well-being of residents. Efforts are underway to address infrastructure vulnerabilities and enhance preparedness for future weather events in the region.
