Hindi Medium MBBS Studies: A Transformative Initiative in State Medical Colleges

In a pioneering move, the Director General of Medical Education and Training has issued a groundbreaking directive to all medical colleges, institutions, and KGMU, urging the commencement of MBBS studies in Hindi, signaling a notable transformation in the educational landscape of medical institutions across the state.

A Paradigm Shift in Medical Education

Preparations for the adoption of Hindi as the medium of instruction in MBBS studies have been in progress since last year, notably in Madhya Pradesh and at LLRM Medical College in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The initiative involves the creation of course-related books in Hindi, primarily aimed at facilitating a comprehensive understanding of the first-year MBBS curriculum.

Implementation of Hindi-Medium Courses

The recent directive by the Director General of Medical Education and Training emphasizes the full-fledged adoption of Hindi as the medium of instruction in the upcoming academic session. It mandates the incorporation of Hindi in teaching and learning, facilitating a transition that aligns with the government’s directive issued on September 31, underscoring the importance of enabling educational practices in Hindi.

Integration of Technical Terminology

Professor RC Gupta, Principal of LLRM Medical College, highlighted that while the Hindi textbooks contain technical terminology in English, they are explained in Hindi, ensuring better comprehension for students. This approach aims to strike a balance between maintaining crucial technical terms in English and facilitating a deeper understanding in Hindi.

Enhanced Learning Opportunities

This significant shift in MBBS studies is expected to benefit students, particularly those from Hindi medium backgrounds, offering greater accessibility to educational resources. Satosh Kumar, General Secretary of the Teachers Association of KGMU, acknowledges the potential impact, stating that the availability of comprehensive study material in Hindi, covering over 60% of the content, will facilitate a more effective learning environment.

Empowering Hindi-Medium Students

The move to provide MBBS study material in Hindi aims to create a more inclusive educational framework, aiding students with a weaker grasp of English. With access to study resources in their native language, students are expected to engage more effectively with the curriculum, fostering a conducive learning environment for aspiring medical professionals.

This transformative initiative in state medical colleges highlights a significant stride towards inclusivity and enhanced educational accessibility, ushering in a new era for medical education through the incorporation of Hindi as the medium of instruction in MBBS studies.
