Holika Dahan 2024: Celebrating the Triumph of Good over Evil

Holika Dahan 2024: Holi, one of India’s major festivals, is preceded by Holika Dahan, celebrated on the full moon night of Falgun month, also known as Choti Holi. This ritual commemorates the demise of the demoness ‘Holika’ at the hands of Lord Vishnu. In 2024, Holika Dahan falls on March 24th, with auspicious timings for puja observed from 11:13 PM to 12:32 PM.

Puja Rituals and Customs

Before the puja, devotees cleanse themselves and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu’s Narsingh Avatar and Devi Lakshmi. Offerings include coconut, garlands, and Akshat. Seven types of dishes are presented during the puja, and the bonfire area is purified with a mixture of cow dung and water. Roli, sindoor, and moli are applied to Holika before igniting the bonfire at the auspicious time.

Guidelines and Recommendations

Gurudev Shrie Kashyap advises maintaining cleanliness around the bonfire, extending generosity, and making charitable donations. Eco-friendly materials are encouraged for bonfire construction. Conversely, one should refrain from leaving hair open, touching unfamiliar objects, lending money, or exhibiting rude behavior.

Essential Puja Items

Akshat, chandan paste, coconut, cow dung cakes, dry wood, roli, flowers, wheat grains, and jaggery constitute the crucial materials for Holika Dahan.

The Tale of Holika Dahan

Legend has it that King Hiranyakashipu, desiring worship as a god, conspired with his sister Holika to eliminate his devout son, Prahlad. Holika, immune to fire, perished in the flames while Prahlad emerged unscathed, his faith in Vishnu remaining unshakeable.

Significance of Holika Dahan

Holika Dahan symbolizes the victory of good over evil. The evening before Holi sees people gathering around bonfires, performing pujas, and offering prayers. Rooted in religious significance, this festival embodies the triumph of righteousness and is celebrated with fervor across India, marking a cherished moment of spiritual connection and community.
